It’s Still a Handgun Problem

In the wake of every outlier event we see a new fad come into the self-defense and tactical community.  Currently, we are taken with the notion of repelling para-gliding terrorists due to certain international events.  While large scale terror attacks may be in our future, thanks to the immigration non-policy of late, the most likely scenario remains the lone, or perhaps several, attackers in a public space.  Unlike other nations that strip their citizens of the right to self-defense, most regions of the United States are heavily armed.  If a similar attack happens, rest assured, it will take place in the bluest locations with the most draconian gun control.  NYC and such locations, good luck.  Elsewhere in suburban and rural communities, even a large group of such attackers won’t last long. 

So, the terror problem, within the continental United States, remains a pistol problem.  Certainly, have a fighting rifle and all accoutrements at the ready in the home, but when out and about in public, you will have your pistol, hopefully, but you won’t have a rifle with you.

With the understanding that the domestic terror problem most commonly falls into the active shooter paradigm, be prepared to respond accordingly.  Most likely one, but potentially several, active shooters who are likely armed with rifles and may be wearing body armor.  Are your skills up to the task?  While it is hardly a fight to go into with only a handgun, it has been accomplished many times.  Consider, though, that with such a heightened threat, the typical mouse guns that work splendidly to deal with a parking lot robbery are sub-optimal here.   A larger, higher capacity auto loader is in order here, and preferably at least one spare magazine. 

A smaller BUG on the ankle or elsewhere may also be sound if spending time out and about in locations where such an attack is more likely, and putting a full IFAK on the other ankle makes good sense too. We simply don’t roam around with long guns, but upping our capability with the tools that can be carried concealed on-person makes good sense during times of increased threat and terror activity.
