The Rifle in your Self-Preservation Plan

The self-defense and preparedness community are interesting in what gets attention.  Apparently, this needs to be said, so I will rain on the parade and say it: the American citizen is far more likely to get robbed on the streets of a city than get attacked by para-gliding terrorists.  That same citizen is far, far, far more likely, by an order of magnitude, to get killed by high blood pressure and metabolic disorder due to a sedentary lifestyle than either.  But, talking about rifles, body armor, and night vision is far more fun than getting off the couch and on the treadmill or weight rack, so here we are.

After that reality check, yes, all free citizens should have a fighting rifle at the ready in the home.  I stand by my outspoken and oft-penned opinion that the handgun is the primary defensive tool of the citizen, as that is what we will actually have, if anything, when it hits the fan if we are in a public space.  But, I have consistently encouraged keeping a rifle at the ready in the home.

One reason for such, beyond perhaps employing it in the event of a home invasion, should you have time, is to protect the neighborhood from lunatics.  I have written in the past concerning several experiences in which people have stopped a massacre in their own neighborhood with a rifle, in one incident in particular, a guy used his bolt-action hunting rifle to neatly dispatch a rampaging active shooter in his apartment complex.  While the handgun is what the armed citizen will more likely use for any given situation, keeping a rifle accessible in the home should be a standard part of being prepared for the world we live in.

The recent event in the middle east does, indeed, exemplify the reason that civilians should have fighting rifles at their immediate disposal.  Could such an event happen here?  Sure.  Likely at a smaller scale, but imagine the damage that even only a few terrorists could inflict on a suburban neighborhood with similar tactics.  Of course, we all know the “gun safety” policies that will be in place in the state and city that gets selected for such an attack.  Fortunately, even our most draconian states are not as bad about disarming the citizen as that place is, although many of our politicians at both state and federal level would love to do so.

When anywhere away from the home during times of relative stability, the handgun is the weapon you will have and use if things go down.  However, in the home, why would you not have the superior weapon at the ready?  Terror attacks are the less likely need.  Unfortunately, there have been many home invasions of late conducted by large groups of heavily armed criminals.  The pistol will likely get you through even here, as home invaders usually run late for a different appointment when they get shot at and flee like the roaches they are.  But, not always, and the modern rifle is a far more effective option in such a circumstance.

Have a rifle, ready, in the home, with a full loadout of magazines and other support gear.  If you live in a blue stronghold that strips you of your basic right to human dignity, then at least have a lever action rifle (a formidable option still legal almost everywhere) at the ready.  The handgun remains the primary, but a rifle, ready to go, is simply a part of the overall life plan.

Live fire practice is essential. To buy the ammo that I use for training at the best possible price, go to:
