I think of improvised weapons as objects that take some configuration to turn into a defensive item, and weapons of opportunity as simple objects in the environment that can be grabbed and used defensively.
Understanding how to use common objects that surround us as weapons, and how to fabricate weapons out of other non-descript items, is a valuable skill to have. These weapons come into play when we must spend time in environments where we are forced to be disarmed.
