I assure you that the amount of violence at houses of worship is at an all-time high in the United States. As of this writing, there were four just this week. You might have heard about the one at the Joel Olsteen Church in Texas, but you only heard about it because it happened at a well-known and very public place, so the media had no choice but to report on it. You probably did not hear about the four attacks that transpired since. You see, reporting on such things does not suit the mainstream narrative which vilifies Americans with traditional and religious values. The media will bury anything that suggests the opposite, namely, the truth, which is that Christians are the victims of intense secular hatred.
And, make no mistake, Christian churches are not the only target. Our history has multiple examples of mosques and synagogues being attacked. There was even a high-profile attack on a Sikh Temple years ago. The United States remains different from most of the world when it comes to religious violence in that most such violence is not “religious violence,” but, rather, it is violence against religion. Despite the efforts of certain political factions to divide us based on skin color, ethnicity, and religion, the Unites States remains incredibly diverse and we get along remarkably well. There has been very little religious based violence against other religions (there have been some incidents, but few). Rather, most attacks on churches or other houses of worship comes from deranged individuals who have a hatred for the people at that particular church, or just have an extreme secular ideology; they hate religion, period.
Why do these monsters hate religion? Because extreme secular ideology worships the state, and if you are religious, you worship God, not the state. Worship of the state lifts individual responsibility off the individual, whereas worship of God lays responsibility squarely on the individual. These people hate the idea of answering to a higher power for their life choices and actions, and the expectation of personal responsibility is like kryptonite to violent, deviant, secular zealots. This is why they detest religion and those who practice it.
If you are religious, you likely cling to all of those “oppressive” ideas that these zealots hate, like wanting to keep pornography and pedophilia material out of your children’s school. If you don’t want your sixth grader to have access to such filth you are labeled a book banner and NPR talks about how you threaten freedom of speech. You might be an extremist who thinks that an unborn child should have the opportunity to live. Notice how, in a very unusual trend that has followed the overturning of a particular court decision, many of these church attackers have been female? Coincidence? You might even be a dangerous radical who believes in biology when it comes to gender. Notice how there have been multiple trans attackers?
I hate wading into political and cultural topics when it comes to self-defense, but let’s call it like it is. Look at what has transpired. Pointing out an extreme ideology here is simply pointing out the facts. Extreme religious ideology is the cause of plenty of violence worldwide, it does not mean religious people are inherently violent. Similarly, most secular people are not violent, but there is an extreme ideology in play that a small portion of sickos are acting out on, and being aware of this ideology is important.
When we analyze the intellectual examination of religion over the course of the 20th Century, we can see the trend that has led to such extreme ideology. Many scholars blame religion for the majority of mankind’s woes. Yes, religion has been hijacked all throughout history as a tool of tyrants, but I would ask the intellectuals, how well has the abandonment of religion worked out for mankind? Nazi Germany, Socialist Russia, and Communist China were all officially atheist regimes, to the tune of 100 million plus dead between them. Good thing those regimes got rid of that disastrous concept of religion, yeah?
This strain of secularism has led to a notion held by many that religion is an oppressive force. Like every other thought ever held communally among mankind, there are those who will take it to a dangerous and violent extreme. The majority of people who are skeptical of organized religion would never even dream of shooting up a church, and I would argue that a healthy dose of skepticism about any religious or secular ideology is a good thing and not, in itself, a problem. But, alas, there remains that small group of individuals who will go to extremes.
If you attend a house of worship, no matter the religion, you are in a location that is hated by a vicious segment of our population. Act accordingly.
