I take in an inordinate amount of information on a daily basis. While such overload is unnatural, and likely unhealthy, for the modern human being, I occupy my intake of such with information that is pertinent to our contemporary survival and security. In other words, I don’t watch cat videos or reality shows. I watch and listen to many sources of information. As such, I thought it might be valuable to compile a suggested list of informative sources, particularly as it pertains to security and preparedness. Obviously, mainstream news is limited at best, and fraudulent at worst. Here, I suggest a number of resources that provide and analyze current and emerging threats, as well as resources for monitoring local events. My recommendations:
For Timely Updates on Domestic and International Activity:
- S2 Underground: You can watch a daily update called “The Wire” on YouTube brought to you by S2 Underground. I don’t know the individuals behind this resource, but it is exceptional. For an overall recap of important events taking place on a daily basis, this is the single best source that is free of political pontification or entertainment. This channel tells you what is happening in a typical format of only several minutes, daily. You should follow S2 Underground. Search for it on YouTube.
- Open Source Intel: Follow Open Source Intel on X for quick and frequent updates on important and unfolding events. This source tends to be well ahead of any mainstream media sources in relaying information that pertains to national and domestic security and defense.
- Gun Talk: Gun Talk is a weekly radio show, hosted by Tom Grisham, and it can be found on all the major podcast platforms as well. While Gun Talk is imminently entertaining in covering all firearms industry news and Second Amendment politics, it also delves deep into analysis of current violence. Grisham always provides excellent analysis of high-profile events, as well as exceptional advice for the armed citizen. Gun Talk is long form, but a great way to stay updated on recent events pertaining to 2A and self-defense.
For Informative Deep-Dives into Preparedness Topics:
- Survival Dispatch: I encourage you to listen to the Survival Dispatch Show, which occurs almost daily. You will be exposed to long form discussions on the most pressing threats on the horizon, and gain a great deal of advice from good guests in how to prepare for these emerging dangers.
- Ironclad: Ironclad is sort of a coalition of different shows, all available on YouTube or most podcast platforms. In Particular, I recommend “Change Agents” with Andy Stumpf, and “Borderland.” These shows dive deep into the international and domestic threats we face in our contemporary world.
- Active Response Training: Prominent self-defense and firearms trainer, Greg Elifritz, authors the excellent Active Response Training blog. Greg tends to write long-form articles about the most recent security threats evolving in the world. This blog tends to delve deep into details that you won’t find elsewhere, and excellent recommendations are always provided to enhance your preparedness against these dangers.
Information at the Local Level:
- Ring App: While being aware of what is happening at a national level is essential, it is also imperative to know what is happening locally, right in your vicinity. A good tool for monitoring local events and criminality is the Ring app. Although designed primarily to support Ring security cameras, you can use the app even without these devices and take advantage of the “Neighborhood” board within the app that posts updates from others in your area regarding security alerts.
- Next Door App: Next Door is an application that facilitates the monitoring of events, as reported by fellow citizens, in your vicinity. Similar to the Ring app in this regard, Next Door allows any member to make posts regarding security concerns.
- Police Scanner Apps: There is a variety of police scanner applications that you can put on your phone that will allow you to hear scanner traffic in your area. While most people don’t listen to scanners on a regular basis, I have found that the scanner app can be useful to tune into if you see an alert on ring, or Next Door, or a similar application. The scanner app can relay the information law enforcement is discussing regarding the event.
While there are many other good sources of preparedness information, I truly recommend those suggested here. Even if you only take advantage of the sources on this list, you will be far ahead of the curve and informed beyond the scope of most citizens. Maintaining awareness of recently developing news is an essential part of your preparation and personal protection.
