Preparation for the EBT Crisis

We are on the brink of the longest government shutdown in history.  Each partisan side blames the other, but this current event simply proves what we all already knew; congress is sickeningly inept, corrupt, and useless.

Be that as it may, the most staggering statistic to come to light as many focus on this problem is the very sad and unfortunate reality that forty-two million Americans are on assistance food stamp programs.  How on earth is that to remain sustainable?

Figuring out this problem in the long term is the domain of economists, not myself, but I will point out the obvious for our near future: if the shutdown continues and the EBT program is not funded, then many people will be facing the stark reality of running out of food.  How do you suppose people are going to react?

Many people on the SNAP program and other assistance are, legitimately, facing hard times economically.  Many, however, are perpetual leaches on the system who have been raised in an environment where the government has replaced family and community in their life, and they feel completely entitled to being provided for, though not willing to work.  Individuals who are raised by a failed segment of society to believe that they are perpetual victims, held down by the ”oppressor,” whomever that may be in their self-justifying imaginations, will get violent.

If we do, indeed, see civil unrest break out over this issue, it will be a perfect example of how fragile the vail of a functioning society is.  It will also prove, once again, that overall preparation is essential.  I have long recommended having at least one month’s worth of EVERYTHING your household needs, in the house, at all times.  Three months is better, but at least one month is doable for most if they work up to it.  Have one month’s worth of food, medications, other essentials, and a means to procure and purify water, in the house.

If violence and looting closes down grocery stores, won’t it be nice to not have to go out in public to procure necessities for your family?

For many, hurricane Katrina clarified the fact that you cannot count on government, be it the federal, state, or local level.  For many others, COVID proved that.  If you have not received the memo by now, I don’t know what to say.  Maybe more still will start leading a prepared lifestyle following potential chaos coming out of this funding crisis.

You are on your own when the system fails, and the system fails easily these days.  Have what you need in the home and have the means and skill to defend your household.
