An Unpopular Observation on Rifles

Precision rifle shooting is very popular right now.  This is for several reasons, I believe.  First, the popularity of precision rifle has grown as the infatuation with the close-range configured fighting AR15 has cooled, leading to a variety of other firearms pursuits, including precision rifle.  Second, precision rifle is very challenging, introducing a lot of, well, math, to the equation, as adjusting turrets and holds, gauging wind, etc…, all come into play.  Third, and perhaps most notably, the gear is intricate, expensive, and infatuating.  Precision rifle shooting is awesome.

But, as it pertains to the average prepared citizen who is interested in primarily personal and family protection, how much applicability does precision rifle have?  I would argue, very little.

Now, two caveats before everyone flips out: first, I posed the question as it pertains to “the average prepared citizen.”  If you are a shooting enthusiast who has embraced precision rifle because you truly love it, all good.  Practicality is not a prerequisite for a craft to pursue.  Second, if you live in the open plains of the Midwest, where, say, the entrance to your driveway is six 600 yards from your house, maybe precision rifle is practical for your self-preservation.  However, for most prepared citizens, I don’t think it serves a pressing need.  I think an AR15 set up with an LPVO, capable easily to 300 yards with no need to dial turrets, is all the prepared citizen needs in a rifle in most terrain.  So, hate me if you like, but there it is.

If you are looking for a rifle to place some time and interest in outside of the boringly ubiquitous AR15, I think a 50-state-legal manually operated rifle should get your attention.  In particular, the lever gun seems like the way to go.  Will you ever have to shoot an enemy at 1200 yards, even during the prepper-fiction dystopia that you are preparing for?  Doubtful.  Will you ever travel to a place controlled by the enemies of your constitutional rights that prohibit your handgun and your AR15?  Most likely.

Your lever gun, equipped with some modern accoutrements, is surprisingly formidable, and can, realistically, get you out of any jam that will come your way in a civilian capacity.  It can also go almost everywhere within CONUS.  I think a lever rifle, chambered in 357 or 44 Magnum, is much more worthy of your time and ammo than is a precision rifle.

Just my two cents.

Besides, don’t you want to be a 21st Century cowboy?

  1. A 357 mag or even a 44 mag Lever Action carbine for Home Defense Option

A 357 mag or a 44 mag Lever Action carbine may be the best firearm for home defense. Hard for a DA to claim that your grandpa’s type lever action carbine is one of those evil “Black Rifle/Assault Gun”. (Even if the carbine is a HENRY “X” model.) The increase in performance in a carbine length barrel versus a handgun is sufficient. Anyone who ever watched a Western can figure out how to work the lever, and recoil is less than a 12-gauge shotgun.
