Just as AIWB carry demands specifically-designed holsters, for best results one should also use AIWB-specific mag carriers. With the increase in AIWB carry among concealed carriers in the past decade we do have far more to choose from in this regard. A foremost feature of a mag carrier designed for this position is the ability to be canted to one side or the other, as it is more ergonomic, and more concealable, when riding in the waistband at a canted angle.
I recently acquired the Koala magazine carrier from Dark Star Gear. Upon ordering it I ran into some frustration as it did not show up for quite some time and I did not hear back from two email inquiries into the order’s whereabouts. I believe, however, that there is a production delay on these, so that may account for the long lapse until delivery, but sure enough, it eventually arrived.
This is my favorite solid kydex AIWB mag carrier that I have ever used. I typically use a nylon material mag pouch for EDC as I find it more comfortable for all day carry, but the downside to such carriers is inserting the magazine each time is more problematic. So, for training, practice, or any competition, a solid kydex pouch is ideal. For these purposes I ordered the Koala.

There are several features that make the Koala better than most. First, it has unlimited range of cant, so anyone can angle it to their exact liking. Second, it is a long pouch, so it rides deep under the belt line. This may sound like a negative, but just as longer AIWB holsters work best, so does the longer mag carrier, as having extra length below the belt aids in pressing the magazine into the body, thus aiding concealment. Finally, this pouch provides adjustment to accommodate any length of magazine and allows customization of how far the magazine stands out from the pouch. This combination of features makes this pouch perform at a superior level for an AIWB worn magazine.
The only potential negative I see is that the pouch will only work with soft loops, not any kind of clip. However, there is no way the design can accommodate a standard clip. Otherwise, I can’t think of anything detracting from this excellent piece of gear. Highly recommended. Also note, I am not affiliated in any way with Dark Star Gear and I bought this product.
